Why partition theory?

My commentary, Treasures and Thorns, is based on partition theory—the idea that 2 Corinthians is actually a composite of at least five distinct letters. I am fully convinced by this theory because it brings Paul's intense engagement and the complex issues in Corinth into sharp focus. I love this letter precisely because it is so beautifully complex, offering a vivid portrait of the early church's real-world struggles.
